Look beyond lies at real motivation of GOP

[Aug-24-2006]

Look beyond lies at real motivation of GOP Our Reader's Speak The Beckley Register Herald People, wake up! Can't you see that you're being manipulated by the rich? Every two years, the Republicans try to inflame the emotions of hard working, middle-class Christian people by waving the specters of abortion, flag burning, immigration, gay marriage, "death tax," support our troops, and "they're going to take away our guns" in front of us. We've had a Republican president and majorities in Congress and on the Supreme Court now for years, and the only thing that's been done with these issues is to have them used to divide the people in order to dupe us into voting for the party of the rich and powerful. All the while, the rich get richer, the poor get poorer, and our soldiers die in a war based on lies that benefit neither us nor the Iraqis. The Republicans want to keep these issues alive in order to continue to ride them to power on the backs of the working class. Look at these examples and you will see the hypocrisy: They say they want to end abortion, yet cut medical and child care programs that help women keep their babies. They love the flag, but want to elevate the fringe crazies who want to burn it to martyr status with a constitutional amendment. They say they want to end illegal immigration, but rich Republicans hire illegal immigrants for increased profit. They shout about gay marriage while knowing that no state will be forced to accept it against its own internal political processes thanks to the Defense of Marriage Act signed by President Clinton. They rant about "death taxes," but not one cent of estate tax kicks in unless you leave over $1 million ... will that apply to you? They accuse others of not supporting our troops while the spouses and children left behind know the best way to support our troops is to not send them into an unnecessary war based on lies perpetrated by big oil men. Finally, the gun issue is a hoax. Unless you are a felon or want some kind of military weapon that theres no legitimate sporting or protective use for in the first place, your constitutional right to own guns is preserved. In reality, the Republicans want none of these things. In fact, the worst thing that could happen to the Republican Party would be for these issues to be settled. Without them, there is no conceivable reason for anyone with assets under $1 million to vote Republican. The unprecedented spending on the wrong war while Osama bin Laden remains free, and while the rich continue to receive colossal tax cuts, has already decreased the standard of living for your children and grandchildren. For their sake, turn back the tide! Look beyond the lies at the real motivation of Republican politicians. The so-called culture war is really war on the working class! Ashley Calloway Beckley
