Reducing State Debt- For the first time in state history, Democrats dedicated more than $715 million, nearly one quarter owed, to fund pension obligations that legislators from many years ago failed to fund.
Raising the Minimum Wage - Democrats convinced the legislature to raise the minimum wage for the first time in nearly ten years. While this increase does not effect all workers it is a major step forward in the fight to improve the lives of working West Virginia families.
Supporting Veterans - Democrats supported our veterans with the passage of new laws to provide educational opportunities to children of military personnel and give bidding preferences to West Virginia veterans on state contracts.
Increasing Mine Safety - Democrats fought for the sweeping legislation that was passed to protect miners, upgrade technology, provide additional oxygen supplies and quicken emergency response.
Reducing PEIA Premium Increases - Democrats worked to cut in half the PEIA increases scheduled for July 1st.
Increasing Retiree Benefits - Democrats supported a much needed retirement supplement to thousands of retirees and dedicated more than $700 million to fund pension obligations that for many years have been under funded.
Expanding Health Insurance Coverage - Democrats worked for low cost pre-paid health programs and discounted basic health insurance plans to help thousands of uninsured West Virginians. Expanding the Children's Health Insurance Program will ensure that our children will have access to health care.
Protecting the Rights of Property Owners - Democrats passed eminent domain legislation that limits government authority to take your property for private development.
Keeping the PROMISE - Democrats kept their promise by voting to fully fund this popular in-state scholarship program.
Leading the Nation in Technology in Schools - Democrats have consistently funded efforts to bring cutting edge technology and computers into classrooms. The work has paid off. Each state's efforts were examined in three areas: access to instructional technology, use of technology and the capacity to use the technology effectively. While on average the nation earned an overall grade of C-plus, West Virginia earned the highest marks with an "A" in access, an "A" in capacity and an "A-" in use.
Controlling the Parkways Authority - Democrats led the fight for legislation to prevent the Parkways Authority from issuing bonds or raising the tolls without the approval of the Legislature. Any future proposed toll increases will be subject to pubic hearings. We eliminated the Shady Springs interchange project, the main reason cited for the increase. The Authority will be thoroughly studied and if additional changes are needed, they will be done.
Consolidated Local Government Act - Democrats led the fight for legislation to allow counties and cities to consolidate services if voters approve of the merger. Now, instead of competing against each other, it will allow local governments to work together to improve efficiency, reduce costs and streamline services.
